Final illustration
Initial sketches
This piece was created for 1804 Books’ annual Study Journal - a publication that pairs revolutionary writing with visual art as a tool for learning and collective action. My illustration accompanied the section on the Birmingham Campaign and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail.
Client and I wanted to capture the movement energy behind the letter rather than focus on King as an individual. The piece plays with fire as a metaphor for how his words sparked courage, urgency, and transformation, how language itself can ignite action.
It will appear in the November issue!
